Single Sex School vs. Coed Schools

listening quietly to a teacher lecture, and taking flawless notes are all required by teachers in schools in today's society. Many girls can ace these tasks, while boys will often struggle with them. This is thought to be because boys and girls have different leaning styles, and schools often use the learning style of the girls (Wolcott). Rick Hawley, head of the University School (the largest private boys' school in America) says, "There's simply a tempo and sequence to the way boys learn that is not better or worse but different" (Wolcott). Boys learn best when they can move around, perform hands on tasks and interact with the teacher in a joking manner. Boys also need time to grow up at their own pace. Boys are frequently more immature then the girls and often take longer to mature. Kerry Brennan, headmaster of Collegiate School in New York, says, " In boy's schools, boys are given time to grow up at their own pace, whereas in a coed setting, girls' earlier and more advanced clocks define everything"(Wolcott).
             Single-sex schools were often thought to be better for girls since they were made to help improve girl's educations when they were said to be falling behind that of the boys. Now that perception is changing, classrooms, curriculums, and cultures can be tailored to the need of both the girls and the boys. Schools that are exclusively for males are now being looked at more carefully as a solution for the boy's academic despairs. Hawley says "I have never been more certain that boys' schools are the way to go given what boys are dealing with now" (Wolcott). If boys attend an all boy's school they will be able to learn at their own pace and will be given the time they need to mature. This may be the answer to the problems that they are having
