Theme for English B
In the poem, "Theme for English B," by Langston Hughes, the speaker, a black colllege student attending Columbia University, has just received an assignment from his professor. The assignment is for all of the students to go home and write a page that"comes out of you." Throughout the poem, the student fights with himself to try and figure out his identity. The student immediately sets himself apart
He then uses a metaphor, comparing the college he attends, Columbia University, to the locationin which he lives. from the rest of the class by writing a poem instead of a paper, which was the assignment. Through this poem, the poet uses casual diction to express his view that as Americans, we come from different backgrounds and ethnicities, yet we are still a part of each other because we are all Americans. He also indicates that his paper will not be white, but will still be a part of his instructor. In his poem, he continues to separate himself from the class as he begins by saying that he is twenty-two and the only African American student in the class. The poet explains how he likes to eat, sleep, drink, and be in love. He points out that even though his professor is white, American, and he is black, African American, they are stil a part of each other. After setting himself apart from the rest of the class and the professor, symbolizing the white race, he then begins to compare himself to them. He descrives Columbia University as being on the hill above Harlem, the city he lives in.
