Media's Impact: Teenage Eating Disorders

For many years, the media has become an influential factor to teenagers and can control the way they think or act. "Monkey see, Monkey do", is a popular cliche that most people have grown to understand and recognize. Studies have shown, that children can mimic an advertising jingle, tv commercfial, movie quote, or any other example of what they have learned from the media, within seconds. (AAP Media Impact). The media offers entertainment, culture, news, sports, and education the influences society's day to day life. However, not alwatys are these messages being taught, a positive one. Recently, teenage eating disorders have become a majaor issue with this (DSY 1011). these are often the results affected by the messages sent out by the media. Television sitcomes and magazine articles frequently try to control the minds of teenagers to portray the kind of lifestyle that is the right way. The media has become the "God", to each individual. For example, if a popular show on tv has a character who is extremely overweight, and has the tendency to eat more and more, not only are they stereotyping, but they are also proving to teenagers that eating less, or completely stopping


Considering this, the impact it might have on teenagers is very sever. Over the years, fast food restaurants, convenience stores, and other supplies of unhealthy food, have been producing advertisements that make the viewer crave their product. In relation, models are viewed as a way of influencing teens to be skinnier. Places like Mcdonalds are a great culprit to this. They also rarely tend to be loners, followers, and less attractive. It shows that teens need to look a specific way, or have a specific weight to be beautiful and generally happy with themselves. To start off, the matter of television and movie characters come into play. " It can enforce a belief, or help to promote an opinion very easily through advertisement or popular leisure. They also use things such as contests to get more prominence and revenue. Instead, an exaggeration is placed to try and captivate the attention of the audience. To some teenagers who struggle with weight issues, this would apply to them. The assumption would be that these perfect women who have been blessed with great bodies, would be grateful to have so. A certain height, weight, and over all look have to be approved for being on camera. Through the overweight characters, modeling agencies, and fast food advertisements, Media has become the influence "God". It is a teenager's up to date technology, and society's infotainment.
