James Langston Hughes
James Langston Hughes was born on February 1st, 1902 to his mother Carrie Langston Hughes and father James Nathaniel Hughes in Joplin, Missouri. Due to his parents divorce his grandmother who lived in Lawrence, Kansas, raised Hughes. Although he had a rough childhood, James Langston Hughes was one of the most respected and genius writers during the Harlem Renaissance in the 1920's. Some of his most acclaimed works include: "The Negro Speaks of Rivers," "Dreams," and "I, too Sing America." One of Hughes most famous "The Negro Speaks of Rivers." I think this poem speaks of the history of the African American heritage. In the first part of the poem Hughes compares ones dreams to a "broken-winged bird". One of my favorite poems by Langston Hughes is called "Dreams. Although this poem is short I think that it carries a very powerful message that can apply to anyone. He knows that he is a blessed to have food provided for him and a roof under which to eat it under. The second part of the poem Hughes relates ones dreams to "a barren field frozen with snow. But I laugh, and eat well, and grow strong. Birds are extremely fragile creatures that rely on their wings in order to survive; there chances of survival become slim if they have a broken wing.
