The crucible, meaning severe test or trial, is a very appropriate title for this play in more ways then one. This title also helps to convey a very important and major theme in the story. In the town of Salem, people were tested at there jobs. The people in the town were tested by all of the excitement that was going on and figuring out who was and was not part of the while witchcraft ordeal. She says to them that if anyone of would say that they did practice witchcraft she would put them into misery. She has had experience when it comes to being put through misery because when she was little her mom was killed right next to her. In the trail Abigail is tested by the court and the other citizens in the town to prove that she is not a witch. There were several severe test and trails including the trail of Abigail and witchcraft prosecution and test of the people of Salem. One example of this is the two men that go around arrest all the people that are being accused of practicing witchcraft. st of authority in the town of Salem. This is a severe test or trail because the trail that takes place is very intense and is the climax of the play. They are tested to see if they will do what is right or do what they get paid for. One major theme in the story is the actually trail in the court room to find out if Abigail and the other girls were practicing witchcraft. The judge in the town is tested by trying to figure out if Abigail and Mary and the others really did practice witchcraft or if they were just dancing. Abigail Williams is a very demanding person; in the play when the town finds out about the witchcraft that might have occurred in the woods that night Abigail is scared about what might happen and she threatens the other girls that were with her. If she could not prove this she and the others would be hanged.
