Biography of Edgar Allan Poe

             Edgar Allan Poe is a person of many characters who has the ability to draw the audiences' attention towards him. One of the many characters that Poe possesses is the dreary character. Using this he writes poems that have the theme grief. A few poems that show this is "To One in Paradise", "Alone" and "Annabel Lee". These poems show how Poe is able to draw the audiences' attention even with the most awful things, like the loss of everything in To One in Paradise. Many of his poems seem to reflect the way in which Poe lived and therefore caused Poe to feel certain ways and write what he does.
             Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston, Massachusetts to two actors, they had not really been the greatest of parents because when Poe was only a six years old he was orphaned by John Allan, hence the name, who was a successful business man I Richmond, Virginia. Poe had died in Baltimore, Maryland in 1849 he died from addiction to alcohol. Reports say that if his wife Virginia had lived then perhaps the drinking would not have begun and he would have lived a longer life.
             Edgar Allan Poe was put into a private school at the age of six when he was adopted by the Allan's in England. When Poe had returned to the US he began school at the University of Virginia. However he was only studying there for one year because his stepfather had refused to pay for anymore of his schooling due to his drinking and gambling. When Poe was unable to pay for the education that he had received his stepfather forced him to work as a clerk. Allan had made a place for Poe to go to the US Military Academy in 1829; however, he was kicked out because of his inability to do his duties. (Encarta, Poe, Intro)
