Adolescent Depression
There is internal turmoil that every single adolescent has to face everyday. One important and serious reason that causes the turmoil is depression. "Depression is still one of the number one emotional issues teens face,"(Adams, 2000). Over the past 50 years, depression has become much more common and is now recognized at increasingly younger age, so does the teen suicide rate. In fact, it is one of the leading causes of suicide (Shamoo & Patros 1990, p 11). The question that should be posed here is why depression is linked to suicide.For some people, depression is a result of a bad mood. For others, it is a serious illness. According to definition, depression is "an illness when the feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and despair persist and interfere with a child or adolescent's ability to function"(Teen Depression, 2000). There are many factors that lead to depression: loss, low self-esteem, loneliness, stress, alcoholism and drug abuse as well as poor coping skills. In addition, one study in the current Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology indicates that a factor fairly common in adolescence is having a mother who is depressed, which in turns increases the adolescent's susceptibility to depression. Loss also can occur when the feel that they have been let down from someone on who they depend. Before giving out the solution, there are something that parent should understand. She failed on the midterm examination and consequently received a C on her report card.
