Same Sex Marriages
For thousands of years, most cultures around the world have recognized marriage as a union between a man and woman. In the majority of modern nations, including almost all of the United States, same sex or gay couples cannot be legally married. Several gay couples have unsuccessfully filed lawsuits in the past century against almost all states for not letting them marry. The most infamous case was in Hawaii. However, same-sex marriages were never considered possible in the United States until three same-sex couples challenged Hawaii's marriage law on the grounds that it discriminated against them based on their sex. (Eskridge 137-138) My topic is gay and lesbian marriages. The importance of this topic is more significant than most people think. It is important to us all, because everyone will be affected if same-sex marriages are legalized. Also in September of 1996, in anticipation of a same-sex marriage lawsuit going on in Hawaii, congress passed and Bill Clinton signed the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). The Act defines marriage for federal purposes as "a legal union of one man and one woman as husband and wife," therefore denying same-sex spouses any federal benefits that are automatically given to opposite-sex spouses. The
After so much openness about sex and mommy and daddy, kids still have questions to ask, because it is hard for them to understand how they have come to be a part of this world. They can live together and be faithful to one another, like many straight couples are, but marriage is more than just loving each other. Neither a gay nor lesbian couple can of its own resources produce a child; another party must be involved. I think psychologically a child who is adopted may have potentially more self-doubt. This not just a problem, it gets down to the roots of social morals in society and influences children's outlook on life greatly. I am completely aware that there are loving gay parents and they would even perhaps do more for the child than the child's real parents but it is not the normal environment for the child. At one point marriage was a matter of business, concerning family ties, social status, and economic support for women, a first hand example would be my grandmother and all her six sisters whose marriages were all arranged. I'm not saying that people should not get married for love, of course they should! That is probably one of the reasons my parents chose to move to America to give me as a woman the opportunity to make my own choices and decisions, like whom I choose to marry. To enter a marriage you have to meet the qualifications, like any other institution, and to try to get around them would be cheating. Also to be adopted into a gay family and become an outcast would not be the best environment for a child that always lacks his/her biological parents and is "different" from the majority of other kids he or she may interact with. But human nature will take advantage of things if it is given due to self-love and other emotional and psychological factors of which there are thousands that play a role in our behavior. This solution is the only one that would work. They would be able to adopt and have children using artificial insemination. It is the only institution that we have to count on for traditions sake. If asked why you did or said such a thing or why your opinion was such? You should have a just answer in which you believe otherwise you are not only not helping your society and probably harming it by making uninformed decisions that will affect you, your neighbors and most importantly your children in the future.
