Shooting an elephant

The story Shooting an Elephant, which was written and experienced by George Orwell, deals with inner politics between two countries, England and Burma. The author says, "I was hated by large numbers of people-the only time in my life that I have been important enough for this to happen to me. I was a sub-divisional officer of the town...As a police officer I was an obvious target and was baited whenever it seemed safe to do so...All this was perplexing and upsetting.'"' When said earlier of George dealing with inner politics, there"'"s only one main political emphasis that is being described; imperialism. But also, he too is referring to a subject that is attached to imperialism; favoritism. The people didn"'"t really favor George until something occurred that caused a disruptance in the town. This disruptance was an incident where he had to shoot an elephant for the safety of the public. In a scene, the author describes how the Burman natives stood around him with hope filled eyes. Due to the natives"'" gleeful expressions, it had led George to do an unthinkable act; murder a defenseless animal. However, the question is, why did he make up his mind to do this type of deed? First, it could be that he was forced to do so

Now here"'"s the thing; if he had other options rather than to kill the elephant, would he had chosen them? The answer would be probably so since murder was the last thing on his mind, let alone that once again, he despised his job. However on the other scale, he really is afraid of something, but just won"'"t show it do to the immense amount of pride that he has. When one takes an oath, he or she must abide by that oath and in George"'"s case, his oath was to uphold the law, and to protect the citizens of Burma. '"' Now if you were in a position where you were expected to live up to your high standards, the last thing you can do is chicken out and look like a fool. He says, '"'I was a sub-divisional officer of the town. George said at the end of the story, '"'I often wondered whether any of the others grasped that I had done it solely to avoid looking like a fool.
