Failed religion
Religious Authority and its Failures in El, Nazarin, and Viridiana Authoritarianism is defined as a form of government in which the ruler is an absolute dictator. However society sometimes views authoritarianism as misused authority. Valid authority is aligned upon a necessary purpose. Misused authority involves reality control and domination. Metaphorically, it is saying one and one equals three, because authorities say so. The most significant synthesis in promoting authoritarianism by religious scholars was the concept of "Natural Law." It reduces morality subjectivity, which has to be arbitrated by authorities. Natural Law says God implanted moral awareness in minds when people were created, but it became nonfunctional and has to be "awakened" by religion. Being supposedly implanted, it was subjectively created by God, not something objective like one and one equaling two. Since it is subjective and needs to be awakened, it can only be handled by religious authorities that must arbitrate morality. And the problem lies with the religious authorities. Religions are failing in its attempt to connect with the people it seeks to help. "The most critical point of attack on a culture is its religious experience. W
The Mother superior has just failed Viridiana. Other comments he makes are those in regards to Francisco. Not sensing Viridiana hesitation to go visit her uncle, the Mother Superior insists that she go and visit him. Nobody is perfect and there are different ways to help people out there effectively. Religious authorities often focus on the privileges of their role while ignoring the responsibilities that come along with the role. So Nazario decides to go to the country giving up his priesthood. Seeing this Nazario becomes angry with the officer and corrects him. After being both mentally and physically abused by Francisco, Gloria turns to Father Velasco for help. The priest here, much like Don Angelo has contributed to the hypocrisy of the church for not living up to the teachings of Christ. The hypocrite does not pay the price of commitment to the religious life and hence does not reap its spiritual benefits; he remains at a low state. Here Viridiana displays her Christian charity by giving the beggars a better quality of life. This holds true, because the authorities are appointed by the Church, thus making them society's source on God. He describes it in the following way: "When the priest consecrates the host, the Lord descends into it with all His Being. His Christ-like attitude is too extreme for the Church and leaves society incapable of understanding his passion.
