Frankenstein: The Use of Isolation
Isolation can be both physical and emotional. It can also be a choice or it can be imposed upon you. A lot of people in the world feel isolated because of their emotions. They could be holding a secret, or guilt. People can also feel physically isolated because they are alienated whether it be from their appearance, social status, or some action that caused them to be a plague to society. In Frankenstein, three of the main characters, Robert Walton, Victor Frankenstein, and the Creature, all experienced different forms of isolation. They were all very different people, but their isolation connected them. We first met Robert Walton in the beginning of the book, and got to know him through the letters he wrote to his sister. Walton wanted the test his theory of the earth's magnetism at the north pole, and was on a ship traveling there. He seemed to be an intellectual, and knowledgeable person, but he felt alone and isolated because the only people he was with were the crewmen on the boat, and they did not share his passion for exploration. Robert Walton had emotional isolation because even though he was physically with people, he didn't have any friends to share his dreams and goals with except for his sister, who was hundreds
The physical isolation, which the creature confronted, was because of his appearance, and was very much alone in the world only because he was different. At last, he could take the pain no more, and he vowed to spend the rest of his life chasing this monster and killing him. Isolation is not something that one always wants to feel, whether it is chosen, or imposed on you, but the characters in this book felt it, and because it is a very real position to be in, that is why we can relate somehow to these characters. The creature did teach himself, however, the DeLacy family indirectly taught him too. In fact the creature considered the DeLacy`s friends, even though they didn`t know it. Robert Walton felt emotional isolation because he had different goals and views than of his fellow sailors. The DeLacy`s then moved, so they could be safe. But Victor refused, so the monster decided to spend his life getting revenge on Victor for making him miserable. Inside, he was no different than anybody else, but in this society, when we are all judged by the way we look, the creature was secluded, and detached from the public. But when the monster had been created, and was out in the world by himself, Victor felt a feeling of apprehension of what could happen, but tried to ignore it. Victor had been working on the creature for two years, and in that time, he made absolutely no contact with his family. This made Victor feel emotionally isolated, even from his family, because he was holding this awful secret. Frankenstein didn't even stick around to teach the creature how to speak, or read, so he had to learn by himself. So in that sense, he was physically isolated, however, he chose to isolate himself.
