Wuthering Heights

Oftentimes adults could learn things or see something they could not see before by looking through the eyes of a child. Children are resilient, rebellious and they have the ability to forgive with less contempt than an older person does. A younger person also has a generally unscarred heart and may love beyond abilities known to themselves or others. Love relationships develop early in life, and although they may be nurturing they may also be just as destructive.
Catherine and Heathcliff developed a nurturing relationship with each other early in life. Catherine genuinely cares for Heathcliff while Hindley despises him. " Miss Cathy and he were now very thick; but Hindley hated him!"P35 Hindley's hatred for Heathcliff makes Catherine's relationship begin to be destructive when Hindley takes over Wuthering Heights after the death of Mr. Earnshaw.
Hindley's cruelty, created by neglection from his father after the arrival of Heathcliff when they were children, created a stronger relationship between Catherine and Heathcliff when he was sent out of the house. " Cathy taught him what she learnt, and worked or played with him in the fields."P42 The relationship had developed a destructive side because they often rebelled together against Hindley's ways. Catherine and Heathcliff runaway to the Linton's at Thruscross Grange. Catherine makes stay for five weeks due to her injury from Skulker, the Linton's dog. They believed the children were gypsies, and surprised to see Catherine. " Miss Earnshaw? Nonsense!" cried the dame;" Miss Earnshaw scouring the country with a gypsy! And yet, my dear, the child is in mourning – surely it is- and she may be maimed for life!"P46 Upon return to Wuthering Heights Heathcliff is without Catherine while the house is still in mourning of Mr. Earnshaw's death.
