Great Expectations

             I. In the opening chapters of Great Expectations, Dickens presents Pip as a helpless and common boy. He had a common background and common future. The instant that Pip saw Estella, his goals changed. Pip's dreams changed from becoming a blacksmith to becoming a rich gentlemen. The reason of this is that Pip fell in love with Estella and wanted to have her. Since the beginning of his expectations, Pip becomes a snobbish and pretentious. Over time and as different events pass, Pip redeems himself. He shows that he is that loving and caring boy in the marshes.
             The first incident that shows that Pip is caring and loving is when Pip arranges for Hebert to become a partner with a sea merchant, which was Clarriker.
             This incident shows Pip's good side because he sacrifices his own leisure or spending money to arrange for Herbert a job that Herbert always wanted. He did this good deed not because he wanted Herbert to pay him back, but to do it because Herbert was his best friend. Pip helps Herbert because he understands that he is getting money easily without working, while Herbert doesn't have that much money. Pip starts Herbert up with the money that he put aside from his expectations.
             There are two quotations that describe the arrangements that Pip made for Herbert. Pip says to Wemmick, "This friend is trying to get on in commercial life, but has no money and finds difficult and disheartening to make a beginning. Now, I want somehow to help him in a new beginning." (p.292)
             Wemmick tells Pip, "You hit the nail on the Head. Mr. Pip, I'll put on my considering cap, and I think all you want to do may be done by degrees. Skiffins (that's her brother) is an accountant and agent. I'll look him up and go to work for you." (p.297)
