             The food retail sector is very diverse and has many firms, both small and large, that co-exist. This report will examine how small and large firms within the food retail sector have found roles in which they can co-exist with each other. The description will also analyze how organizations' value chains may differ and how they make up the factors that influence making decisions. The two organizations that this report will examine are Tesco and Spar convenience stores.
             Tesco is a massive firm with many chains, which offer a wide range of products and services to its customers. On the other hand, Spar is a relatively small firm with a tiny number of chains, which offer a limited choice of products and services to its customers. Spar is the largest convenience store group in the UK (http://www.spar.co.uk/).
             Tesco exists within the public sector, and Spar exists within the private sector. The aim of most private sector organizations is to earn profit for the owners, whereas public sector organisations operate with relatively diverse and unquantified objectives. Different legal forms exist within the private sector, for example, sole trader, partnership, and limited company.
             Firms, which are owned by sole traders, possess control over the firm's activities and decisions. Sole traders tend to be small businesses and have limited capital resources which can affect areas such as product development and launching new products on to the market. For example, an owner of a small convenience store would not have the funds to provide a service such as loans and financial assistance and would therefore face major competition from firms such as Tesco who have a substantial amount of funds to launch new products and services onto the market. A sole trader would be liable for any debts the company faces.
