A Mothers Divided Heart

             The goal of raising children to be productive members of a rapidly evolving, achievement oriented society is paramount to the success of the family and the global economy. At the same time, the stress of every day individual economic needs as well as personal fulfillment needs is a significant counter force. All of these forces work against the amount of time and effort required by mothers to successfully nurture their young. These decisions has resulted in societal "mommy wars", pitting the working mom against the stay-at-home mom, in a battle over which version offers the clearest path to nurturing success. Choosing which path to follow is a difficult decision to make because "most mothers – and fathers, for that matter – have little choice but to preserve on both fronts to pay the bills" (Langevine). As a way to bridge the gap in understanding why women choose the path they do, each side needs to accept that there is not one right choice for every family and to understand and respect each individual decision. The bottom line is all moms have one thing in common: they make sacrifices to do what is best for their families.
             The choice to a working mom means not spending as much time with her children, and for the stay-at-home mom it means not getting a lot of time to herself. The decision of being home or not with the children is not as important as creating an environment where the children can thrive and feel loved. Stay-at-home moms are often seen as soap-opera-watching, couch potatoes with little to no ambition. Instead of them being praised for their decision to stay home, they often feel they need to defend it. Society talks so much about family values, yet it gives little respect or value to stay-at-home moms who raise their families.
