Acupuncture

Imagine being at work, in your noisy office with all the phones ringing and people talking. You are sitting at your desk with a killer headache that you can't stand anymore. In this case we would probably take out a bottle of aspirin to get rid of the terrible pain, but in other places such as China you might see people going to a acupuncturist to get some needles placed on the surface of their skin to help get rid of terrible pains, such as a headache pain. Sound even more painful? Chinese believe that acupuncture is a cure for pain and some diseases without the use of medication. Acupuncture has been part of Chinese medicine for years, it is a form of medical therapy that involves inserting thin needles into the surface of the body to help reduce pain and cure some diseases. The ancient Chinese medical technique for relieving pain, curing diseases, and improving the health of people was created before 2500BC in China. By the 20th century acupuncture was being used in many other areas of the world. Acupuncture grew out of ancient Chinese philosophy's cosmic theory of the yin and the yang (Chang 14). The yin, which is the female principle, is passive and dark represented by the earth. The yang, which is

Another usage of acupuncture is for the use of anesthesia. This method is used to distract the patient with the pressure of the thumb so that they won't feel the insertion of the needle. Patients who will have head acupuncture are usually asked to lie down for the treatment to prevent fainting (Firebrace and Hill 110). In the USA, until the 1970's, acupuncture was largely used in the oriental parts of major American cities. An additional risk is that some patients who seek this form of therapy as an alternative to medical examination and treatment may have important symptoms or major diseases that can go undetected (Chang 198). Not only is the pain suppressed, but also other physiological functions are maintained at normal levels, and the body's power to resist disease is strengthened as a result of needle stimulation (Chang 52). A cup is prepared and placed over the needle on the skin. Cupping can be combined with regular acupuncture. Acupuncture is used for the curing of some diseases and pain. Acupuncture can also be used in cases of emergencies such as a drowning incident. Traditional medicine associates shock with fainting, exhaustion of the body functions, or diseases in which the strength of the Yin and Yang is depleted. There has been research done on the effectiveness of acupuncture. Large quantities of American's have begun to study acupuncture and schools of acupuncture have been established in various parts of the country. All other utensils needed must be sterilized also (Anand and Kroll). If a patient is uncomfortable, there is a possibility that he or she will move while a needle is in place, causing it to bend (Chang 73).
