Like water for chocolate

             Like Water for Chocolate tells the story of Josefita or ¡§Tita¡, as she is popularly known. She is the youngest daughter of the de la Garza family of Mexico. She was born in a very odd situation. While her mother, Mama Elena is busy preparing in the kitchen, Tita smelled the onions. Thus, she came into this world crying. A few days after her birth, her father died. Due to shock and despair because of her husband¡s recent death, Mama Elena¡s milk dried up. So Tita was given to the loving hands of Nacha, the house cook. Tita grows up in the kitchen, understanding the world in terms of food and enjoying her privacy in the domain of the kitchen. At the age of fifteen, Pedro, the love of Tita¡s life, asked for permission to marry her. However, Mama Elena didn¡t approve of the proposal. The de la Garza family has a tradition that the youngest daughter is forbidden to marry and must take care of their mother until the day the mother dies. Mama Elena offers the eldest daughter, Rosaura, instead. Tita is dismayed with this harsh tradition and though she submits to Mama Elena¡s wishes, this tradition never stops her from loving Pedro. Pedro reluctantly agrees to marry Rosaura because it is the only way to be near Tita. When Pedro and Rosaura¡s first child, Roberto is born, Tita is overjoyed. And since Rosaura cannot produce milk, Tita takes on the responsibility of nursing the child. Tita then discovers that she is miraculously full of milk and nurses the child. This strange event brings Pedro and Tita¡s illicit bond even closer. However, Mama Elena senses that Roberto brings Pedro and Tita closer. She then arranges for Pedro, Rosaura, and Roberto to leave the ranch and transfer to another place. A short time after the three left, news came that Roberto has died. This causes Tita to have a breakdown and Mama Elena sent Tita to an asylum. Dr. John Brown, a doctor, takes pity on Tita, brings her to his house, and nurses her back to...
