Like water for chocolate
Like Water for Chocolate tells the story of Josefita or "Tita", as she is popularly known. She is the youngest daughter of the de la Garza family of Mexico. She was born in a very odd situation. While her mother, Mama Elena is busy preparing in the kitchen, Tita smelled the onions. Thus, she came into this world crying. A few days after her birth, her father died. Due to shock and despair because of her husband's recent death, Mama Elena's milk dried up. So Tita was given to the loving hands of Nacha, the house cook. Tita grows up in the kitchen, understanding the world in terms of food and enjoying her privacy in the domain of the kitchen. At the age of fifteen, Pedro, the love of Tita's life, asked for permission to marry her. However, Mama Elena didn't approve of the proposal. The de la Garza family has a tradition that the youngest daughter is forbidden to marry and must take care of their mother until the day the mother dies. Mama Elena offers the eldest daughter, Rosaura, instead. Tita is dismayed with this harsh tradition and though she submits to Mama Elena's wishes, this tradition never stops her from loving Pedro. Pedro reluctantly agrees to marry Rosaura
She provided Tita with love and support that Mama Elena failed to give. After sometime, Tita learns that she is pregnant. Because of her jealousy for Pedro and Tita, she too becomes ill. The novel follows her life from birth to death, mainly through her sufferings with her love for Pedro. She ran away a revolutionary soldier and worked in a brothel after Tita's special meal with with rose petals served as an aphrodisiac for her. Personally, I like the way the author wrote this book. Parents should not also stand in the way of their children's happiness. It also tells us that sometimes, there are parents who don't care about their children; parents who are jealous of the children, and the causes of their very own children's pain and sorrow. Tita, in desperation to be with him, ignites her inner fire by eating candles, thus setting her body on fire. She ran off to the fields, naked and on fire. Her unity with Pedro in the afterlife sets the whole ranch on fire. Meanwhile, Pedro and Rosaura return to the ranch and Rosaura bears another child, Esperanza. John Brown V He is an American doctor who took care of Tita when she had a breakdown after little Roberto died. She becomes obese because of Tita's cooking, and she experiences indigestion and gas.
