             Profit maximization is a common goal of most firms. Some business are in the pursuit of profit making unilaterally, regardless of its negative effects on environment. However, the concept, sustainable development, defined as the balance among economic development, environmental protection and social equity, and the financial advantages of sustainable development give businesses good reason to be socially responsible for the concerns of long term benefits. Still, it is argued that profit making and sustainable development supporting are contradictory. The essay will demonstrate that businesses are more or less aware of their social responsibilities according to four levels and that, in fact, businesses can be both environmentally responsible and profitable.
             The extent of businesses' awareness to social responsibilities is not uniform. Some businesses are very aware, whereas some are not aware at all. It varies with different firms. There are four levels of awareness to social responsibilities, which give complete explanations. They are basic level, current attainable level, practical level and theoretical level.
             A business of the basic level is not aware of social responsibilities at all. Such firm only follows regulations when they do the business and they make no extra efforts to support sustainable development. (Payne and Raiborn, 2001:B-4). Payne and Raiborn (2001:B-4) also point out that environmental protection is never incorporated into the mission statement of the business at basic level and such business doesn't invest any money on environmental protection which they see as an increase in cost. A business of basic level operates legally but not ethically because they are not aware of social responsibilities and they do nothing to support sustainable development (Payne and Raiborn, 2001:B-4).
