"The General History of Virginia" and "Of Plymouth Plantation" The first settlers of America all came for different reasons, had separate goals, and different ways of life. Although they were all different they all risked their lives for a new life in a new world. John Smith and William Bradford were two completely different types of people. John Smith was an adventurer which one can easily see from his writing, like in "The General History of Virginia". William Bradford was a pious Puritan, which is brought out in his writing in "Of Plymouth Plantation". Their differences and similarities on their views on Indians, tone and style are personified through these two works of writing. John Smith and William Bradford have strong personalities that live through their writing. The two men are very different from each other, but still share some similarities. Both John Smith and William Bradford encountered Indians in their explorations of the new world. They handled these encounters very differently. John Smith saw the Indians as "sa
He also is very informative and historical. John Smith believes that when he was captured there was "much sorrow for his loss", even though he was not there to see it. John Smith tale is over embellished, so it is hard to say what is true and what is not. William Bradford and his Puritan companions had a very different encounter with the native people. His main purpose in his writing is to glorify his God. Although both men were inspired enough by their experiences in the new world to write about it the reasons they wrote and how they wrote were very different. John Smith uses long complicated descriptive sentences and his tale seems to be extraordinary. Even in that respect there were many differences. John Smith and William Bradford wrote in different styles as well. William Bradford was surrounded by death when he arrived, but he did not doubt his God. He knew that the people's "recompense was with the lord". William Bradford had a very different tone he was humble and wrote in first person. One man saw the natives as "barbarians", the other saw them as equals. It is easy to derive from his writings that he is looking for money and to glorify himself. John Smith and William Bradford both were born and raised in England at around the same time, but they were very different people.
