A Brief History of Christianity

             In terms of the number of adherents, Christianity is by far the largest religion in the world and the most active of all faiths with 1.9 billion Christians spread across the world. Christianity originated in Israel, on the birth of its founder, Jesus of Nazareth in Bethlehem. Jesus, born of the Virgin Mary by the power of the Holy Spirit, began his ministry at the age of thirty. His ministry includes call fellow Jews to repentance, proclaiming the approaching of reign of God on earth and performing miracles. He preached the coming of the God's kingdom but was rejected by the Jewish leaders, who delivered him to the Romans who crucified him. On the third day after his death, God raised him up again. He appeared to his disciples, commanding them to spread the good news of salvation from sin and death to all people. This, according to Christian beliefs, is the mission of Christ's church. The resurrection of Jesus was proof of his divinity and incarnation.
             Christians follow to forceful beliefs: Jesus Christ as the Son of God and that God sent him to live as humans live, suffer as humans suffer and die to redeem mankind and gloriously rise again. During that time, there were two great leaders of Christianity: Saint Peter, the "rock on which the Church was to be built" and Saint Paul, a Jew born in Tarsus, a Roman general who had a vision about Jesus and became the greatest missionary of Christians. When Jesus died, there was a great change in Christianity history. It spread from Palestine (Holy land) and the rest of the world. This was in the 4th century. It is in the Roman Empire where the emergence and growth of Christianity was very rapid. This was because Constantine the Great, a Roman emperor made Christianity as Rome's official religion.
