Hamlet vs. Macbeth

             Shakespeare in his time has written many powerful plays, in which all share similar aspects. Hamlet and Macbeth along with the rest of his works have in common the tragic element of a hero, his tragic flaw and use of supernatural events. Although they are quite different in situations, the main elements are similar. The main characters in the two plays both house an internal conflict, Hamlet's being the death of his father and the rapid remarriage of his mother. Macbeth's struggle involves greed, power and the way he goes about getting the throne.
             To begin, Shakespeare involves supernatural events at the opening of both Hamlet and Macbeth. In Scene I Hamlet is visited by a ghost of his father, the late King Hamlet. The ghost is only visible to Hamlet himself, Marcellus and Bernardo. Though the two instances aren't exact, in Macbeth it opens with three witches who set the eerie tone of the play. In Hamlet the ghost recalls an event in which describes his death and his bother's motive to be with Gertrude. The witches on the other hand tell Macbeth what will happen in the future, foretelling that he will be named Thane of Cawder. In both cases the hero struggles to determine the intentions of the occurrences, wether it is bad or good and seemingly both characters chooses go believe that they are good.

             May be the devil: and the devil hath power
             To assume a pleasing shape; yea, and perhapsOut of my weakness and my melancholy,
             As he is very potent with such spirits,
             Abuses me to damn me: I'll have grounds
             More relative than this: the play 's the thing
             Wherein I'll catch the conscience of the king."
