I particularly liked 'An Inspector Calls' by J.B. Priestely as it is a thought provoking story about responsibility for one another. To pass this message across to a middle-class family J.B Priestely sends the character the Inspector along to the Birling's home. He arrives during an engagement party of Shelia Birling and Gerald Croft. As Mr Birling, the buisnessman is telling his son Eric and his future son in law Gerald about how everyman should take care of himself and stand alone the Inspector enters at this opportune moment. Immediately as the doorbell rings I know that the theme of responsibility is going to be developed.
             The Inspector's personality is revealed throughout the play. My first impression of him is that he is suspiciously clever and well informed about ther death of Eva Smith. My suspicion grows as the story continues and as he seems to know more and more. He is also manipulative which makes him a rather mysterious character as it comes across as though he has some mystical power to make the members of the family confess. He uses his hard and glaring look to pull the answers out of the family and I find this rather mysterious. Other characters in the story realize his suspicion as we can tell from the stage direction:
             'He regards her calmly while Shelia stares at him wonderingly and dubiously'
             From this I can tell that Shelia sees in him that there is some sort of mystery about him
             'No. She wanted to end her life. She felt she couldn't go on any longer'
             This shows the Inspector's honesty. He will be honest at every moment even when he has to answer a question that the family wil ot easily be able to handle such as the one above. He did not consider sparing Shelia's feelings to her simple question about Eva's death. He will always simply give the answer which helps to explain the seriousness of the situation to get the message of responsibility across to the fami
