The color purple

             Reading is one of my favorite things to do. It captures my mind and takes me to a place of tranquillity, a place where I can let my imagination take over. If I was stranded on a deserted island, the one book that I would bring is The Color Purple. This book has all the literary elements that are essential to me: adventure, comedy, mystery, suspense, action, drama, and best of all, love and friendship. Every time I read this book I find myself transacting deeper and deeper. I encounter new ideas and thoughts that I hadn't recognized the previous time. Every time I read this book I gain more from it.
             The story of Celie is told through letters to God and her sister. At age fourteen Celie is raped and become pregnant. She is forced to give up her child for adoption. It seems as if Celie is always bound to give up something. Celie is forced to give up her freedom when she has to marry an older man. He abuses her both mentally and physically. Celie has low self-esteem and does not know what it means to be loved until she meets Shug Avery. Shug is an old friend of Celie's husband. Shug makes Celie look at life in a different way. Shug tells Celie, "you have to git man off your eyeball, before you can see anything a'tall." To me, this quotation means that woman should not rely on men. Once a woman realizes that she can be independence she is on her way to freedom. This quotation gives Celie motivation to stand up for herself and leave her husband.
             This book contains life lessons. The greatest of all is that everyone should be loved and learn to love. This book discusses many different topics including abuse, rape, racism, discrimination, and is filled with intense emotion. There is an abundance of lessons that can be learned from this book.
