Nigeria

Liberia is a fascinating country located in western Africa, bordering the North Atlantic Ocean. The terrain is mostly flat land with a few low mountains in the northeast. The climate is very remarkable being tropical with dry winters and rainy summers. Liberia appealed as an interesting country to me, because of its relationship with America, diversity, and cultural richness. Liberia is 6,000 miles away from America, but has a very similar flag the represent the search for its identity, and the Liberian sate. The flag has alternating red and white stripes with a blue square in the upper right hand corner with one white star. The history of the Liberia is very appealing. Free slaves from the United States settled this land of freedom in the 1800's. In addition, I chose this African state, due to its non-ending civil wars between the settlers and indigenous Africans. However the slave owners did this for their benefit of spreading Christianity and avoiding salve revolt

Their supreme court consists of a chief justice, five associative justices, and judges that are appointed by the president. Many traditional killings were recorded as sacrifices but as accidents or natural causes. Vice President Tolbert tried to fix the economy, however Samuel Doe killed him in 1981. The holidays in Liberia are very similar to the ones celebrated in the United States. The ritual murders were committed during the civil war by the religious group members called heart men. One type of work that is done in Liberia and all society's is blacksmith. The most visited beaches are Bernard's, Barnes, and Kanjeda. The people didn't like him, because he was an authoritarian ruler. On July 26 they celebrate Independence Day. After all the wars and civilians killed the country is still trying succeed. This is a festival in honor of women who lit a canon and saved her townspeople in 1822. In Liberia as wells as most societies women sell products at open markets. This was the land that the African slaves first settled on.
