Love & basketball (compare&contrast essay)

As one can infer from the title, the movie Love & Basketball is about love and basketball. The New Line Company released this movie in the year 2000. Love & Basketball received many good reviews from movie reviewers. Unlike the many reviews that commended the script of Love & Basketball from beginning to end, Mark Caro's review and James Berardinelli's review not only commend the movie but they also point out a few aspects of the movie that could have been better. There are two areas of the movie that Caro's and Berardinelli's review compare and an area both reviews contrast. Both say that the story shifts slightly towards the female perspective more than the male. Both also commend the writer/director of the movie (Gina Prince-Bythewood) for the technique she uses. They write that the technique helped balance out the time periods of the characters life, making the movie more interesting and comprehensible. However, they disagree on the characters. Mark said all the characters especially the leading characters were well chosen, while James felt one of the leading characters is not. After all, the reviewers gave Love & Basketball three out of four stars.

Not only this, we can also translate it to how the society view women basketball players and women that are starting to play men's sports. " After one sees the movie one will understand why Lathan's character overshadowed Epps's character. In fact, despite the fact that Omar Epps is a leading character in Love & Basketball", he still pointed out that he looked too mature for his character. Monica must be declared the victor of this cinematic game of one-on-one. In his review Caro writes, "Prince Bythewood does a nice job balancing the sports and romance angles of her story. She falls in love with him and he with her. There, she introduces herself to her basketball-playing neighbor, Quincy McCall, (Glenndon Chatman). " This statement is realistic because the director/writer conveyed a true message to the viewers. They remained friends until the night Monica wore her slam-dunk prom dress. Quincy is a gorgeous person who dreams of becoming a NBA (National Basketball Association) star like is father. " Mark Caro and James Berardinelli's are movie reviewers whose reviews on Love & Basketball compare and contrast opinions on the setting, directing and selection characters of the movie. What Prince-Bythewood did was she divided the story into four parts, each designated with a title such as "First Quarter," "Second Quarter," "Third Quarter" and "Fourth Quarter".
