The American Dream
The American dream is one shared by many North Americans for nearly a century. When people dream of grand deeds they will perform, and great heights they will reach, what they are really dreaming of is the freedom to do so. Willy is not free because his perception of the American dream has trapped him in the profession of a salesman, not his natural course. Willy's dream is based more on monetary goals and popularity rather than success in a profession that he enjoys. Willy Loman twisted the American dream until it destroyed him.Willy could never achieve the American dream. He was bound to live his life between mediocre success and failure. Willy chose a profession that he thought he could make money in, not one that he appreciated. The American dream in the 1920's was one commonly shared by the public: to attain success; especially amounting to the accumulation of money and material goods as quickly as possible. When he'd come home/ from a trip; or on Sundays, making the/ stoop; finishing the cellar; putting on the new porch; when he built the extra/ bathroom; and put in the up the g
Willy kept his faulty view right up to the end of his life. / You were never anything but a hard-working drummer/ who landed in the ash can like all the rest of them! I'm one/ dollar an hour Willy! I tried seven states and couldn't raise/ it. Willy's distorted dream was his undoing. Willy's last hallucination is of his brother, Ben, who agrees with Willy that he should commit suicide for the $20,000 life insurance. 41) However his brother did have some flaws as seen when he tripped Biff in their boxing match. Biff: I am not a leader of men, Willy, and neither are you. Willy never had the freedom of the American Dream. Willy twisted the American dream so that he could never be able to fulfill it. This was Willy's last-ditch attempt to add up to something, and prove to himself, that he had successfully obtained "the American dream". His lies and deceit caught up with him. A buck an hour! Do you gather my meaning? I'm not/ bringing home any prizes any more.
