Special Journey

             The term "international migration" encompasses many movements: voluntary emigration, work migration that has been legalized by work, residence permits, and expulsion forced by violence or life threatening situations. Many minority immigrants have willingly traded off their language and culture in hopes of pursuing the "American Dreams". They have come in huge numbers from Vietnam in search of basic economic and social needs. Certainly a driving force for these immigrants is the aspiration to achieve a better life for themselves and their children.
             Because the United States is viewed as a land of opportunity, millions flock to her shores and across her borders annually to a land where they hope hard work and sacrifice will be rewarded. Many are settled in comfortable homes while some families lived in the most poverty stricken sector of town. No matter where they reside, each family has one goal and one purpose: to succeed. Vietnamese parents tend to have relatively low levels of English language proficiency and education, low-paying jobs, and few financial resources. However, they encourage their children to take advantage of American opportunities, rise beyond their parents' capabilities by excel academically, and at the same time keep their Vietnamese traditional values.
             Given an opportunity to attend school, I was able to adapt to the English language more quickly. This accomplishment led me to be more determined in pursuing a post-high school education. With no examples in my family to draw from, my eldest sister was able to find and thrive her way through high school. She is now in her third year at Baylor, applying to dental school. Likewise, my other sister is at Texas Christian University studying to become a pediatrician. I look up to both my sisters for support and guidance because I am going through what they have already experienced. From their achievement, I am more determined and work hard...
