Annalyzing Emily

In the short story, " A Rose for Emily", William Faulkner brings the readers' attention to one specific character. He outlines the life of Emily Grierson. There are people throughout the story who affect Emily. These people have such an impact that their influences lead to her lonely death. Emily is sheltered by her father, outcasted by the town, and rejected by Homer. Emily's father is a rather wealthy man who shelters her by taking possession over his daughter to ensure that she never leaves his side. While growing up, Emily does not have much of a love life due to her father's running everyone away. Thr

The death of Emily's father was the start of the realization by the community that Emily is a person. Being left 2alone, and a pauper she had become humanized. Because of her sheltered and spoiled life, Emily's relationships with others are affected. Now she too would know the old thrill and the old despair of a penny more or less" (132). Emily quickly falls in love with Homer Barron and later gets rejected by this man that she has given all the compassion and attention that she once gave her father. At last they could pity Miss Emily. After he passed away, he left her with the large estate and no one to love. Emily Grierson has many people throughout her life that affect her and formulates her lonely death. Because of this rejection, Emily is again left alone. After Emily realizes that Homer likes men and is not in love with her, she kills him because she can not live with out someone else so dear to her heart. After her father's death, Emily has no one in which she can turn to for consolation. Due to the way Emily's father spoils and shelters her, the community shuns her leaving her with few associates after his death. Her many heart-breaking relationships make her have a lonely life that is continuous until her death. These experiences lead to her downfall, which in turn leads to her lonesome death. The people of the town outcast Emily throughout the story.
