An exploration of the role of symbolism

An exploration of the role of symbolism in One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich by Alexander Solzhenitsyn and Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. After reading Alexander Solzhenitsyn's One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich and Gabriel Garcia Marquez's Chronicle of a Death Foretold it became clear to me that a lot could be done comparing the role of symbolism in these two novels. Both stories used symbolism completely differently and one story had many contributions added to it through symbolism while the other used it through foreshadowing. The books cannot be compared in a sense of which is better because both authors wrote their books for different purposes, but analysis of the role of symbolism is possible. This essay will explore the role of symbolism in these two novels. In Alexander Solzhenitsyn's novel, One Day... there are many main symbols focused on throughout the book. The three main symbols are Shukhov's spoon, bread, and Tsezar's Parcel. Also mentioned were some minor symbols such as Shukhov's trowel. The symbols in this novel are used effectively and contribute many different things to the work.Shukhov's spoon that he carefully hides in his boot after every meal he eats shows how he i

" Though this is one of the stronger symbols in the book. For example the symbols in Santiago's Nassar's dreams, Angela Vicario's unopened letters, and not to forget the minor symbols foreshadowing Santiago Nassar's death. Tsezar's care packages, that he receives from an unnamed source, makes the rest of the prisoners jealous of him because even the guards and officers give him special privileges for some of his special goods. Angela Vicario's obsessive letter writing is another example of symbolism. If there were very strong symbols in this story I think it would take away from the focus of events happening around the time of Santiago's Nassar's death which the author clearly wanted to focus on. And eventually Bayardo returns to Angela, "carrying a suitcase with clothing in order to stay and another just like it with almost two thousand letter that she had written him. Shukhov then gives Alyoshka one of his prized biscuits, without worrying about getting paid back, and for the first time in the novel it is shown that Shukhov is putting his mind before his body. One of the prisoners named Alyoshka refers to the Lord's Prayer, which mentions our daily bread and this shows the more spiritual side of the bread. In Gabriel Garcia Marquez's novel, Chronicle. The symbols not only give the book more depth than a regular prison story but they also make it more understandable and personal. I think the way each author integrated the symbols suits their idea of what kind of novel they wanted to create. One would think a man, like Shukhov, would have a prized possession such as a knife or a destructive tool, but since his choice is a spoon it shows that he is focused more on his well being. They were arranged by date in bundles tied with colored ribbons, and all unopened. tended to not bring anything to the table that was too symbolic or could possibly make you misinterpret the purpose of the whole story.
