Out, out

The poem "OUT, OUT –" by Robert Frost deals with a boy working as a woodcutter who loses both his hand and life after a serious accident with his saw.
Although at first glance a structure is not visible the poem can be subdivided into five passages and includes various stylistic devices.
In the first paragraph Frost introduces the scenery by using a very interesting method. The poet firstly focuses on a rattling saw "in a yard" but then gradually leaves the scene and finally ends up describing "five mountains" and the "sunset far into Vermont". By proceeding like this the reader gets to know the place where the future plot will happen but moreover can develop a feeling for the atmosphere since a vivid description of both the concrete setting and Vermont with surrounding are given.
The first paragraph conveys a very beautiful and harmonic picture of nature which indirectly introduces the colour red by mentioning the sunset. Red is a colour which can not only have positive but also negative connotations. Although in connection with the introduction of the text the reader might think at first it was the positive one which the poet will focus on, we will see that the meaning of the colour red will develop in the course of the poem.
In the line where I would start the second paragraph, the poet rapidly returns from the mountains and the sunset to the saw in the yard by nearly repeating the first line. In this passage a boy is introduced who is obviously incessant hard-working with another though day lying ahead of him since "day was all but done".
Furthermore an important group of people is introduced for the first time which is not addressed with a name throughout the whole poem. It is not clear who "they", as the poet calls them, are but it is certain that they play a key role since they appear several times in the poem.
