Sabbath

             The Sabbath day is on the seventh day of the week in the Jewish calendar. The Sabbath begins around sunset Friday night and ends around nightfall Saturday night. In some Western languages the word for Saturday means The Sabbath, such as El Sabado in Spanish. The Sabbath celebrates the day G-d rested from all the work he had done from the previous six days of the creation of the world from being completed. The Torah proclaims that the Jewish people to also rest on the seventh day to thank G-d for everything that he has provided us with. We imitate this by not doing everything that we normally do on the weekdays; such as drive a car, cook, make fire, and many other activities. The Sabbath is a time when Jewish families get together after a hard weeks work. Even though the Sabbath meals are joyful it consists of two loaves of bread placed on the table with a bottle of wine. The two loaves of bread are covered with a cloth (usually white). The bread is covered by a cloth to show its importance and how bread is more important than wine, however in the Jewish culture you have to say the blessing for the wine first. So we cover the bread with a cloth so it won't be embarrassed.
             The Sabbath day begins with the lighting two candles to remember the commandments of G-d and to keep the Sabbath day holy. Usually the candles are lit by the woman of the house and are lit before sunset. There is a short blessing as they are lit. After the candles are lit the family goes to the synagogue for the Friday evening service and comes home when it is finished to sit around the dinner table.
