James Earl Carter
"For this generation, ours, life is nuclear survival, liberty is human rights, and the pursuit of happiness is a planet whose resources are devoted to the physical and spiritual nourishment of its inhabitants." (Carter) Carter's political views during his path to the white house brought efficiency to the government, they also included a focus towards human rights. His standing on foreign policy ultimately led him to receiving the Nobel peace prize. Jimmy Carter was born October 1, 1924, in the small farming town of Plains, Georgia, and grew up in the nearby community of Archery. This is where his political background began. According to his bibliography, James Carter was educated in through the publics schools of Plains, then he attended Georgia Southwestern College and the Georgia Institute of Technology. After schooling he joined the navy and received a B.S. degree from the United States Naval Academy in 1946. (Kaufman) Carter and his administration could point to a number of achievements in domestic affairs. He dealt with the energy shortage by establishing a national energy policy and by regulating petroleum prices to stimulate production. However, he worked poorly with traditional Democratic politicians in the state legislature, and gained a deserved reputation as an arrogant governor, which led him to be isolated from politicians who might otherwise have become his political allies. Although he was unpopular with the people no one rejected his policies and ideas. According to Brian Balogh's website entitled American President, the new governor's inaugural address surprised many people in Georgia by calling for an end to segregation, and received national attention for it. His expansion of the national park system included protection of 103 million acres of Alaskan lands. During Carter's term as governor of Georgia, he increased the number of African- American staff members in Georgia's government by 25 percent. He has emerged as a supporter of human rights and worked for several charitable causes. He championed human rights throughout the world. Jimmy Carter won and served as President from January 20, 1977 to January 20, 1981. In 1962 he won an election to the Georgia Senate. But his primary concern was the state's outdated and wasteful government bureaucracy. (Balogh)All in all, James Earl Carter Jr.
