Christianity and pagan beliefs are seen throughout England in 500 A.D. Even though many Anglo Saxon converted to Christianity they still held on to their pagan beliefs through song and story. These beliefs are seen in the epic Beowulf, such as these warriors believing God created the heavens and the earth. They also believed there was this uncontrollable fate the destined their lives. The fate of his lost friends and companions", the Anglo-Saxons believed that fate destined them to death or to life (Kinsella et al 40). "By one; death was
When Beowulf is fighting Grendel's mother and his armor is being clawed and bitten into, but still the armor looks new. Their writings in Beowulf show how much religion meant to them. Beowulf is an epic with the bases and teaching of Christianity. Pagan beliefs gave them confidence, but Christianity gave them compassion. This shows they rejoiced God, but also had a great fear of him. God banished these demons but by God, these demons were punished forever for the crime (Kinsella et al 40). They learned moralistic values and faith. The narrator brings hope and faith throughout the reading of the epic Beowulf. Beowulf had a lot of confidence when fighting Grendel because he knew, "fate that night, intended Grendel to gnaw the broken bones of his last human supper" (Kinsella et al 46). It clearly states that they believed God the Almighty made the earth (Kinsella et al 39). "They gave thanks to God for their easy crossing", showing how much they appreciated God and his doings (Kinsella et al 42). They also believed when a human being died they had lost fame and their life all at once (Kinsella et al 52). They believed in salvation, "for those who will rise to God, drop off their dead bodies and seek out Father's peace" (Kinsella et al 41). They also believed in this idealistic belief of fame.
