The Essence of Life: Feeling and Reason

             Our lives consist of two different worlds: the external world and our internal world. The external world is objective, because it is constituted by natural and societal laws that everyone follows. This practical world, or the outside world in our own perspective, is where everyone lives and interacts with one another. On the contrary, our internal world is subjective, because it is constituted by our own thinking, feeling, and imagination. This subjective world is where only we ourselves are capable of entering, because we are the only ones who have access to our own mental sectors.
             Although all of us conduct our lives in both external and internal worlds, we have different definitions of what a good life is. Some might define a good life in terms of achievement in the external world, such as money, power, or recognition. Some might define a good life in terms of achievement in the internal world, such as wisdom, or internal comforts. Everyone strives to make a good life, and according to the person¡s own definition, the person will pursue the elements, such as money, that in their own opinions help to achieve a good life. However, it is clear that instead of pursuing the element, we are pursuing what the element provides. For example, money provides material comfort; instead of pursuing money, we are actually pursuing material comfort. The elements themselves, therefore, are clearly not our ultimate goals, but they are the means for us to reach good life. No matter which element it is that we are pursuing, we tend to think or imagine that the element can bring us some kind of happiness, whether it is in the material or the inner world. Therefore, what we really want in general is happiness or a happy life when we are pursuing the so-called good life. In other words, we generally define, either consciously or unconsciously, a good life as a happy life.
