The saying, "men are from Mars, women are from Venus", is a simple way of explaining
that men and women are completely different in many ways. Is this difference due to biology;
the genetic difference that we are born with, or gender; the cultural difference that society
influences? Through biology and gender stereotypes the ideal women is formed. A stereotype is
"widely held but fixed and oversimplified image of a particular type of person or thing. This
person or thing [appears] to conform to such and image." Women are stereotyped by expecting
them to act more feminine than man, talk differently than man, and have a different appearance
than man. All of these labels impose restrictions and limitation on what kind of person a female
Women are expected to react to situations more passively, with more compassion and
emotion, and with less physical endurance. For example, women were once thought unable to
participate in distance running activities because they would be physically incapable of
completing the task, and if they did complete the run, it would permitly damage their
reproductive organs. Of course we know this is not true, but these biased assumptions that
women are not as capable as men creates an image that women should not act or behave the
same way men do, instead, women should be reserved, polite, and feminine. Females are even
raised a certain way to believe they should act differently than men.(Henslin, 147) Since
childhood children are given gender specific toys to play with. Boys are given more aggressive
toys like cars and trucks that required physical activity, whereas, females are given more
reserved toys like dolls and colouring books that require quiet play.(Eder,158 ) Each gender
