In the Stern there is a Leaning Body

"In the Stern there is a Leaning Body""En la popa hay un cuerpo reclinado" Rene Marques is a famous Puerto Rican author. His work "In the Stern there is a Leaning Body," deals with many issues including the role of woman in society and their effect on men. This story examines masculinity, specifically through the eyes of one man. The story is told by both a narrator and the protagonist. The narrator describes what is going on at the present moment and the protagonist relays his thoughts and memories to the reader. These thoughts are interspersed throughout the story, making the work difficult to read and confusing at times. What can be even more confusing for the reader is the absence of names in the story. There are only three main characters and they are the protagonist, his wife, and their son. The story begins in the stern of a boat. There is

As the story continues, we begin to see signs that there is going to be a dramatic ending. At the end of the story, the protagonist cuts his penis own penis off. His wife is very demanding and also controls him. Although Marques does not specify, I believe that the protagonist used the poison to kill his wife and that is the body that is immobile on the stern of the boat. The son has a problem with his throat and later dies. This story is extremely confusing and it is difficult to discern the meaning behind the story. a body leaning against the stern of the boat and it is not moving. Why did he castrate himself? Perhaps because he was sick of fulfilling the role of a man providing for a women and he wanted to "cut off" his manliness. We learn that he had a very controlling mother who forced him to become a teacher instead of a writer, which was his life-long desire. The mother uses the son to relate to the protagonist that he is not a good husband and that he doesn't provide like a real man should. In order to escape his dismal life, the protagonist dates a prostitute named Anita who is dark-skinned. Unlike the wife, she doesn't demand anything or ask for anything. Nobody really knows for sure what Marques was trying to communicate.
