Oedipus
'Oedipus is as much to blame for what happens to him as Fate.' Do you agree? Fate is unpredictable. No matter what we do fate has already determined who we are. The play 'Oedipus the King' shows that fate is inevitable. The play is set in the fifth-century BCE, Athens. We first see Oedipus as a great King. His life has already been decided before he is born. He blames himself for whatever happens ti him. Yet as he finds out his destiny, he becomes a different person. Finally, it is his fault for what Oedipus grew up not to know his biological mother and father.
But Teirasias did not make it happen, Oedipus did. Fate appeared before Oedipus is born. He tried to escape from these realities. Teiresias said he will kill his father and marry his mother. He has suffered a lot after hearing the bad news. Whatever Oedipus is doing, it is making his prophecy come true. The Chorus says that it is better to die than to live in blindness and it is not the gods' fault that causes this tragedy. Later he finds out his identity later I the play. Jocasta, the mother and also wife of Oedipus told him not to go further and forget the things that he has done but Oedipus did not listen. When Oedipus is born, he is sent to die on the mountains. But really, there is nothing Oedipus can do once it happened. Oedipus' life leads to horror and tragedy. Teirasias said he would become blind and a beggar. As he finds out the truth about himself, he did not blame the gods but blamed himself without question.
