A Look In The Life of John Proctor

             The great playwright Arthur Miller had many works under his belt when he wrote The Crucible. In this story, his many characters showed the diverse traits of society in Salem. Today's society can reflect upon his sociable insights in The Crucible. His social commentary is evident throughout the whole. One character in particular shows signs of issues still common today. "Even the flutter of a butterfly's wings, can cause a typhoon half way across the world." - The Chaos Theory. In the play, The Crucible, John Proctor shows his and societal true colors while dealing with issues like adultery, politics, and religious pressure.
             Well known around the village, John was involved in an adulterous relationship with Abigail Williams. He was a young, handsome man who was irresistible to women. These lustful acts come back to bite Proctor when there is a trial for witchcraft. In order to stop Abigail's rampage through the town, he takes the stand and confesses to his adultery. He did this to prove that Abigail is not so innocent. Arthur Miller used John and Abigail's adultery to record a social plague, even among the most religious of peoples, that was prevalent during the 100's and continues on today in most societies.
             Another social issue that Arthur Miller addressed through the character of John Proctor is the hypocritical nature of the town. Even thought John is critical of others, he himself is a hypocrite. He condomns adultery and other acts of sin but he is also guilty of these acts.
             Throughout the story John Proctor is used as a pawn in two political games. One is the game between Reverend Parris and the situation with Abigail. Parris needs Proctor to keep his mouth shut in order to keep his job and position as pastor of the church in Salem.
