Gattaca - true hero
WHO IS THE REAL HERO IN THIS FILM?..... A 'Hero' is defined as a person who displays courage or noble qualities, or the main/principal character in a story, film or poem. This definition sums up Vincent/Jerome perfectly. Not only is he the character whom the movie is based on but too someone who shows courage, strength and persistence in achieving his dream. Vincent 'refused to play the hand he was dealt' and with little hesitation went to all extremes to transform himself into a more superior member of society, a valid, Jerome Morrow. In doing so, a height adjustment was required and after going through the torturing procedure, the 'genetically made' Jerome never questioned Vincent's commitment and determination in pursuing his dream. When Vincent/Jerome's position as a navigator on the launch for Titan was confirmed, Vincent/Jerome and Eugene celebrated as all their hard
It is only until the end that Vincent/Jerome realizes Lemar has been helping him chase his dream, merely because his imperfect son also admires him and his efforts. These filmic techniques heighten the suspense and make Vincent/Jerome more admirable for taking such a risk. During one round of chicken, Vincent physically out did his manufactured sibling Anton, surprising them both. Vincent/Jerome proved many people wrong by out doing 'his potential' as he wasn't satisfied with the fact he couldn't live like a 'valid'. Vincent/Jerome's parents believed they would out-live their unhealthy, 'godchild' and the Janitor too believed that it was impossible for a natural birth such as Vincent/Jerome to be a part of Gattaca. Vincent/Jerome also taught Irene, a valid who accepted her flaws that prevented her from launching into space, that he was living proof that it is possible to achieve more than you are programmed to. When the detectives do random checks in town, Vincent/Jerome is forced to dispose of his contacts leaving him virtually blind. Irene learnt that he physically out did his life expectancy by 10,000 heartbeats and developed an IQ that enabled him to work as an elite navigator. Anton was in need of rescuing and it was Vincent who was the hero, despite Anton insisting he beat himself rather than Vincent beating him. It is evident throughout the film that Eugene admires Vincent/Jerome's strength of mind in striving for his goal despite his genetic make-up and burden of imperfection. Even though Irene was aware that she was 'luckier than most, not as lucky as some' it was Vincent/Jerome that inspires her to possible obtain her goal of traveling further than around the sun. He admitted he 'never saved anything for the swim back', always giving 100%, which sometimes only got him, an invalid, half way there.
