Realistic and romantic elements in

Realistic and Romantic Elements of "The Overcoat" Gogol's "The Overcoat" has many realistic and romantic elements. In my opinion there are more romantic elements. It seems that this is a type of bedtime story for a child. Its purpose conveys to me a lesson of treat everyone as equal or you will be humbled yourself. Some of the realistic elements I have picked up on are as follows: The compassion of the new clerk and the reaction of the person of consequence after his friend leaves seem somewhat realistic because some people feel sorry for those in compromising situations and feel regret after scolding someone who may not necessarily have deserved such intensity, but as did the person of consequence when he went to his friend's house after learning of Akaky's death, they get on with their lives. Unlike Akaky's leisure time activities, the pastimes of the other clerks seemed realistic, for example, they played cards, went to movies and parties and gossiped with others. The timidity of Akaky seemed to be an exaggeration of realistic. I have known many people to be timid and to use vague phrases and unfinished questions, maybe not quite as much as Akaky, to get their points across. They also seemed incapable of asserting

The main character's name being Akaky, resembling kaka or defecator is one of many romantic elements. Some might love their work but probably do not obsess over it as does Akaky to the point when a horse has to snort over his shoulder or he has to run into a cop to realize that he is not engaged in his copying. Even after being reprimanded by the person of consequence it said that Akaky walked out into a snowstorm - perhaps also a romantic representation. The coworker's apartment also seemed to romantically represent the warmth of his new life/attitude; they had candles, cards and entertainment, and fine food and champagne. So did the appearance of the street before he lost the coat- the lamps were dim and there was a lack of people and houses; it was described as a 'gloomy fearful desert'. The drive of Akaky to get this new coat, his giving up candles, changing how he walked, and at night confining himself to only the nourishment of the thought of his new coat all seemed far-fetched to me. Another realistic element was when the narrator claimed not to know what Akaky was thinking about the picture in the window made this 'absolutely true' story seem more realistic. It also seemed hard to believe that when he received this new, warm coat that brought him out from the cold of his pathetic life being the most triumphant day of his life; it also seemed the same for Petrovich because he succeeded in not only making a fine coat but succeeded in bringing Akaky to the same level as everyone else - materialistic. It also seemed symbolic of the moral when the person of consequence was pelted by snow (cold) when the ghost took his coat and breathed a chill from the grave on him. The portrayal of Petrovich as a devil figure (the toe nail, his wife's reference to him as a one eyed devil and his insistence, as if the devil nudged him, on a new coat perhaps to bring Akaky out of the cold of his pathetic life) also seemed romantic. Also seemingly romantic was the turned up nose of the person of consequence's daughter - the person of consequence had his nose turned up to Akaky. Akaky's ghost terrorizing timid people and taking coats seemed to be the romantic moral of the story - to treat others as equals and stick up for yourself or you will be humbled to their level. Among others is the way he is treated by his coworkers, before he gets his new coat they pick on him - as children might do to another, and after his new coat they suddenly change their attitude towards him as a fickle child might do. After he lost the coat Akaky was back in the cold, when it was stolen he fell face first into the snow/cold, he also returned home covered in snow. themselves or sticking up for themselves to a superior.
