Maybe he was just trying to get people to their defenses and let God come in to their hearts and take some of the weight of their sins away. Edwards says "The wrath of God is like great waters that are dammed for the present; they increase more and more, and rise higher and higher, till an outlet is givenn; and the longer the stream is stopped, ther more rapid and mighty is its course, when once it is let loose. Through out the whole sermon he trys to scare people into a more religious lifestyle. In the sermon he warns the people that they will be torminated in hell if they don't repent their sins now. e chose Crist as their savior now that they will not thrown into the firey pitts of hell. " I believe he trying to say you turn away from something the more it is going to build-up and eventually tear you up or throw you down.
