My Ainsel

The culture to me seems to be more based on scare tactics and urban legends in the short story My Ainsel. The Scottish people have a lot of "stories," and "folktales," that seem to rule them as much as the general law does in this period. Though mainly aimed at children it seems to stay with a person long past the time they "venture out on their own." The mothers use the tales to scare their children into submission instead of actual punishment. In this story we see that to make the boy come to bed she tries to get him to believe the "Good Folk," are going to come and get him for staying up with his Ainsel. Folktales are so powerful in our lives that st

People have become more and more superstitious through the years due to these folktales. On the other hand folktales can be a good way of bring out a point of thought or even a moral standard such as Aesop's Fables. I think that without these folktales there would have been a lot of people who were outright rebellious and evil, but because of the morality of these stories they were taught as a child not to act this way. I am not Scottish and as such I do not take heed to a Scottish tale such as My Ainsel. I am more inclined to more fear the stories in the modern day texts, and stories that relate more to my time period or stories that are related more to me the American or the student. Though these are examples of an imagination gone wild its roots are in the folklore of old. These moral truths are the basis for many of today's beliefs as well. In conclusion, I believe not in the tales, but in the truth of the stories. These tales have caused people to think some strange things. Today they are called urban legends and don't scare as much as they may have, but the outcome is the same. ill today we believe in the "Boogeyman," and monsters under our bed. Even though I do not personally believe in folktales I do believe that all folktale stories have a purpose for their day and that these purposes are fulfilled by the scariness of them. Aesop's Fables were stories told that had a point of truth or a moral truth to it.
