The Tempest and Wizard of OZ

Imagination, something that we don't have quite a grasp on, but is said to be the formation of a mental image of something that is neither perceived as real nor present to the senses. Nearly 400 years ago Shakespeare cast a most powerful spell. He created the tempest - a mysterious moody romantic drama that still to this day enchants audiences. Amazing sights and powerful poetry fill this play, which is dominated by a main character with magic powers, but yet the tempests magic illusion is its effect on its audiences through their imagination, it will lend itself to almost any interpretation. Now 65years ago Victor Fleming directs a movie of fantasy that plays on the subconscious imagination of Dorothy gale played by Judy Garland. It contains nothing of royal weddings, births, princes, princesses, magic carriages or knights. Instead your taken on a journey with a young heroine from Kansas and an ominous cyclone to many many miles away in the east of nowhere to the amazing Land of Oz with a cornfield scarecrow, a new fangled sort of metal-work man and an Omaha-bred sideshow huckster in the role of a wizard. Yet there's also continuity with older tales with wicked witches, good queens and a lion along wi

Thus with perfect fairy tale symbolism Dorothy is whisked far away from home only after having already decided to leave home. Within the tempest Shakespeare uses a Technique with Prospero the main character that makes him not only a magician and powerful man but various other characters such as a father, a scholar, a regular man and so on. Therefore was it really the scarecrow, tin man and lion who were unable to think, feel and be brave or was it Dorothy's subconscious imagination that created these characters to gain and teach her what she herself felt she lacked. If we look at The wizard of oz Prospero is portrayed within the story but from within various characters. As the 4 of them discover at the end that each of them always had what they had longed for but never realised, through this journey of speculation and inspiration from each other they matured and learnt to use what was always there. Through both productions the Audience is taken on a journey to learn and discover along with the characters. Prospero seeks revenge through vengeance and creates a storm bringing those of Naples to the island in which he was sent upon, one they soon believe is a New world, Shakespeare alludes to this utopian vision ( a book written by a philosopher by the name of Thomas Moore) throughout the play, as well as alluding to classical references and historical references as the play was written in renaissance times. Some of these include having Miranda and Ferdinand fall in love, having Ferdinand and his father both think the other never made it ashore, Sebastian and Trinculo finding each other and prepared to kill Prospero and rule the NEW WORLD. The audience on the other hand is well aware of what is happening and this is created by dramatic Irony. In the end Prospero's revenge and vengeance transforms into forgiveness; the most highly regarded Christian value and this is a result of being inspired by his puppets and their experiences therefore acquired back his dukedom. Prospero seeks revenge from his brother Antonio for taking his dukedom and the wicked witch of the west seeks revenge of Dorothy for the death of her sister. Prospero uses his magic and his trusty spirit Ariel to gain revenge and his dukedom from his brother by staging a project into using a series of illusions to control each of his subjects. Both texts interpret imaginative journeys and these journeys guide us into worlds of imagination, speculation and inspiration. Shakespeare gave Prospero Metatheatrical qualities. When she arrives in OZ it's a "NEW WORLD" in colour, one away from her old dull lifestyle one should I say 'over the rainbow' one in which she dreamt.
