Gothic symbolism

Symbolism is a main ingredient in all books, stories, and tales. Symbols include objects, characters, figures, or colors used to represent ideas and concepts. The tone of the symbolism can give a setting to the reader, allowing him or her to make comparisons and emotionally connect to the characters and events taking place in the story. In Jane Eyre, Gothic symbolism is very prevalent. Descriptions of themes portraying large lonely mansions, isolation, dreary climates, lightning, mystery and secrets all create the atmosphere, suspense, and foreshadowing that keep the reader enthralled in the story. I felt all these symbols were tied together in the climax of Jane Eyre, when Jane's fiance's (Mr. Rochester) secret is finally revealed. All the creaky noises, faint voices and unexplained tragedies are directly tied to his old wife who had gone insane and been locked up in the third story of the old mansio

All the qualities the insane, unknown woman possessed can be directly displayed in Jane's other half if she would have married Mr. Numerous symbols lead up to this surprising climax, all of which carrying a gothic theme. Jane is continually socially criticized, financially trapped, and excluded from love. Rochester, in a mysterious mansion, was foreshadowed by the already struggling Jane Eyre whose life had been molded by misfortune and soliltude. Jane's character symbolized self-reliance, independence, and common wit. The unexplained fire, the attack of a mysterious being on Mr. In Lowood, where Jane went to school and experienced constant chastisement from teachers, a dark aura followed. What made this ironic was the connection this had with Jane and Mr. The Red-Room, death at Lowood, the isolated mansion and its ghostly atmosphere, the secretive ways of Mr. Rochester's insane wife represented the exact opposite, inferiority, dependence, and solitude, which would have parrelled those of Jane had she married Mr. And with this revelation came the apparent realization of what jane would become had she married Rochester. The marriage between Jane and Rochester itself would go against all these personal attributes Jane had strived to keep. The secret was just waiting to come out, there was no reason to believe things could work out for the best for Jane.
