Charles white

Did you know that Charles White's paintings involved the issues of art, race, and politics? Through out this essay you will learn about Charles White's background, style of work, and what makes his work significant.I am one who tells the truth and exposes evil and seeks with beauty andfor beauty to set the world right. That somehow, somewhere eternal andperfect beauty sits above truth and right I can conceive, but here and inthe world in which I work they are for me unseparated and inseparable.[I]t is the bounden duty of black America to begin this great work of thecreation of beauty, of the preservation of beauty, of the realization ofbeauty and we must use in this work all the methods that men have usedbefore. First of all, [the artist] has used truth - not for the sake of truth, not as a scientist seeking truth, but as one upon whom truth eternallythrusts itself as the highest handmaid of imagination, as the one greatCharles White was born on April 2, 1918. At just the young age of seven, he became fascinated with drawing and with reading books as a way to escape the trials of everyday life. An avid reader, White read a book by the name of "The Ne

First of all White did an excellent job in portraying the average African American female. His canvases, woodcuts, monumental drawings, and murals convey his strong social consciousness and impart the inherent dignity of his subjects. He spent time at artist's studios learning many different types of painting techniques. After reading this book White learned that he had never realized that Negro people had done so much in the world of culture, that they had contributed so much to the development of America, here he first became acquainted with Black historical figures and heroes. I think that the main purpose of this particular painting was to help recognize the important role that female African Americans play in society. I am glad I had this opportunity to learn more about Charles White and African American art. " Charles White is considered one of the greatest American artists of the twentieth century. While observing this painting you quickly notice the extraordinary detail put into the painting, which is used to create a strong sense of realism. With his amazing spirit, vision, and brilliance, he devoted both his life and work to portraying the African American community. One of his most popular pieces was oil on canvas painting created in 1951. Most of White's work concentrates not only the poverty, strife, and despair of the black people but their strength of community, the joy of enlightenment, and the tenderness of kinship as well, rejecting the usual stereotypes of black people as inferior. Most importantly, I think his work is significant because he was one of the first artists to concentrate mainly on the importance of African Americans. This started in the early 1940's and continued throughout the 1950's. In May of 1937, he was granted a one-year scholarship at the Art Institute of Chicago.
