Brave New World Research Paper
How would you react if on your wedding day they told you that marriage had been banned and church services would no longer be provided for the people? Adding to that, that promiscuous sexual activity would be encouraged for people of all ages and that drugs were to be given and taken by everyone. How would you feel if they told you that you could no longer be an individual? Would you fight against this world full of corruption, or would you live with it? Many ask themselves after reading Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, why would he create a world in which he provides an insightful reflection of human behavior and social values using mostly immoral characterization? In Brave New World, Huxley creates a world where people are conceived by the "Bokanovsky's Process, where one egg will bud, will proliferate, and will divide. Then from eight to ninety-six buds every bud will grow into a perfectly formed embryo" (Huxley 6). Due to the Bokanovsky's Process, the normal cycle of marriage and having children was discouraged in the World State because it was believed that the "carefully monitored population controls could be disrupted"(Beckham 4). After the test-tube babies are infants, they are sent to learning centers or institutions
Also Soma was encouraged by hypnopaedic slogans such as, "A Soma in time saves nine, these here drilled into their heads during their nursery days on"(Beckham 4). Despite the fact that marriage and having children was discouraged, promiscuous sexual activity was actually encouraged by the World State and the people. They believed that this function of sex was a way of getting pleasure--the highway to happiness. Soma was everything to them, it was the thing that helped them pass through those high bumps on their highway to happiness. But with their highway to happiness, the World State had to establish some rules, women had to wear "Malthusian Belts convenient caches of birth control devices in order to forego pregnancies"(Beckham 4). Also when they were angry over a certain issue Soma was their way into happiness. Huxley truly admired Ford's ability to create and control such a business. Although Huxley tries to avoid a specific religion, he does not make all his character unaware of Christianity. He is aware of the terrible brainwashing techniques done to the children in the learning centers and of the horrible addictions to Soma and promiscuous sexual activity. Named after the hallucinogenic drink used in Hindu sacrificial ceremonies" (Hochman 2). "The worship of the supernatural savior had been supplanted by worship of a lord of the assembly line, Henry Ford"(Beckham 4). This not only showed the reader that some of the characters did have some consent that Ford was not their ultimate god, but also that Huxley was not the immoral person with no religious belief that some people thought he was.
