Antigone - loyalty
From reading Antigone, loyalty can come in various forms. One form is Antigone expressing loyalty to the family by giving her beloved brother, Polynices, a proper burial in honor of his death. However, being loyal to the state is important as well. Creon and the citizens of Thebes respect the law, which show loyalty to the state. Belief is played in this complicated concept of loyalty too. It gives the characters a sense of faith and hope within themselves. In this play, loyalty expresses itself through a person's eyes with respect to the family, state, and mind. Showing devotion to the family is very significant. It is a way of showing respect to all members and ancestors. Antigone, for example, ignored the firm law enforced by Creon in order to express her loyalty to one of her loving family members - Polynices. "I will bury him myself. And even if I die in
She believes that her family is most significant rather than the law of the state. "Once my strength gives out I will be done at last. They may never know if they choose the right one, but they certainly put their heart and soul into what they truly believe in. All the characters in this play have their choices and choose one to follow and believe in. On the other hand, Creon and the citizens follow their loyalty to the state because they know what the punishment is if a law is broken which is death by stoning. In this play, Antigone is strong willed and will do anything to show admiration for her brother. There is the importance of loyalty to the family, state, and belief. With all that said, the concept of loyalty is surely a broad topic. In Antigone, loyalty of the state is the majority. They have no intention of stepping out of line. What is worthy is being loyal to what the heart reveals and believing in it. Ismene shows loyalty to her family by letting herself die in admiration of her family also. All that matter to them is what they have accomplished ultimately. Juggling with both family and the state, both are incredibly important.
