New Imperialism

             During the 1800s a new phenomenon was born, New Imperialism. As a side effect of the Industrial Revolution, countries started to seek ways to fulfill their individual interests. These nations included the major powers of Europe, Britain, France, Germany, Belgium, Italy, Spain, and Portugal. All of them embarked on a crusade to better its economy and to tend to military and political interests. The Industrial Revolution sparked the demand for many foreign products and it caused markets to search for ways to expand around the world. Merchant ships and naval vessels required fuel and supplies that they could get only from foreign bases around the world and this forms the body of the political and military interests, and they forced industrial powers to go out and conquer islands and harbors in order to satisfy these interests.
             Africa was greatly affected by New Imperialism. The European powers sent forth hundreds of thousands of troops in order to satisfy and secure their own interests. The Europeans met armed resistance all over the continent. Algerians, Zulus, the Asante, the Yao, the Herero, and the Zimbabweans were all fierce forces that the Europeans met. Through the use of the Maxim Gun and other advanced technologies, Europeans overtook almost all of Africa. Most of Africa eventually adopted western lifestyles and became colonies. Others detested the western societies and that were biased towards white people.
             In order to satisfy the economic interests of Britain, it took over a large fraction of Indian lands. India had a wealthy supply of raw materials and it was perfect for markets. Britain took over Indian lands by turning rival, Indian princes against one another. When that did not work, the British came in with superior firepower.
