New Imperialism
During the 1800s a new phenomenon was born, New Imperialism. As a side effect of the Industrial Revolution, countries started to seek ways to fulfill their individual interests. These nations included the major powers of Europe, Britain, France, Germany, Belgium, Italy, Spain, and Portugal. All of them embarked on a crusade to better its economy and to tend to military and political interests. The Industrial Revolution sparked the demand for many foreign products and it caused markets to search for ways to expand around the world. Merchant ships and naval vessels required fuel and supplies that they could get only from foreign bases around the world and this forms the body of the political and military interests, and they forced industrial powers to go out and conquer islands and harbors in order to satisfy these interests.Africa was greatly affected by New Imperialism. The European powers sent forth hundreds of thousands of troops in order to satisfy and secure their own interests. The Europeans met armed resistance all over the continent. Algerians, Zulus, the Asante, the Yao, the Herero, and the Zimbabweans were all fierce forces that the Europeans met. Through the use of the Maxim Gun and other advanced technologies, Europea
Indochina was dominated by Europeans because of many of its rich resources. As a response to this raid, the British deployed several naval warships to China and were ordered to bombard naval ports. Europeans were overjoyed when it opened. Thailand was exceedingly lucky, the king of Thailand, King Mongkut, did not underestimate the western powers and avoided anything that would cause an invasion, however they were turned into spheres of influences of both Britain and France. Western powers grew more powerful and hospitable while colonized nations became the opposite. Soon, Hawaii became a state in 1898. A positive aspect of the British occupation was that they changed the existing justice system and made it so that all Indians had equal punishment for their crimes, unlike before. Egypt continued to modernize, although nationalist discontent increased. When that did not work, the British came in with superior firepower. Britain took over Indian lands by turning rival, Indian princes against one another. Both nations got their share of the Iranian oil. Others detested the western societies and that were biased towards white people. India had a wealthy supply of raw materials and it was perfect for markets. Britain and Russia struggled for influence in Iran, for Iran's rich oil fields.
