Fate vs free will

The question of whether our lives are controlled by fate or free will has and will always be around, because we will never have evidence that either is right or wrong. I however, have a belief that our lives are governed solely by free will. I think we are all given the chance over the course of our lives to make our own decisions. Our fate, or the way our life turns out, is the outcome of which ones we make.
I have been raised as a Catholic, so I do believe that God has a plan for each and every one of us. However, I also believe that it's merely a plan, not necessarily a destiny. This plan is simply the path that God hopes we follow, but it's up to us to make the right decisions to stay on that path. I have also been taught to go to church to learn the gospel, so that I can live by the Bible and practice God's ways. If we were all fated to make certain decisions and to end up a certain way then why would we bother going to church? The gospel is supposed to help us make the right decisions. Therefore, if fate governed our lives we would not need to be taught the gospel, because our decisions would already be predestined. I question myself though, because if there is a God, how can there be free will? God is supposed to be all knowing, so he would know our future before we were even encountered with decisions to make. This issue is controversial though, because personally I believe in God, but how can we say that God knows all of our fates when some people do not even believe in him.
Furthermore, believing in God, I believe that each person has an afterlife in either Heaven or Hell. If our lives were fated then that means at birth, each person is already destined for one or the other. In that case, I don't think it's neither fair nor right for anyone to be fated for Hell before given a chance. If God or some greater being is the one who supposedly chooses our destiny, I don't believe he would doom anyone...
