Obedience

             Journal Entry Obedience to Authority Punishment is just not working in the governments correctional facilities. However, it is not necessarily the guards fault. The article Opinions and Social Pressure by Solomon E. Asch, talks about this experiment in which there are nine college students in a classroom. The experiment makes a point about how people in a group react to pressure. The subjects were all asked a question and in a line that was pre-determined, they answer. IN the first experiment talked about, the last person was not really part of the group. Therefore, when they were all asked a question, they all answered the same incorrect answer. The last person was hesitant to say the answer he wanted to say, but he did anyway because he was right. Before that, though he was going with the whole group ' s answer in the first two questions. Therefore, they took more results and they came up with this, " under group pressure the minority subjects swung to acceptance of the misleading majority ' s wrong judgments in 36.8 percent of the selections " (Asch, 309). What is meant by this is that almost 40 per cent of the time people were just following orders, just like in the first article. Stanley Milgram did an experiment with an electric chair and an actor. It was not a real electric chair, but the students thought it was. Any way has, every time the actor gave a wrong answer the students were directed by Milgram to shock them. " As the subject in the electric chair seemed to suffer more and more, 2 out of 3 unwitting students administered shocks that would have been lethal in real life " (Milgram, 304). What was taken from this experiment was that every person could be a torturer. Furthermore, another man named Robert Orkin says that " while there are lessons to be learned from these studies, the particulars of the soldiers ' life in Abu Ghraib also need to be taken into account " ( Orkin, ...
